It was like meeting an old acquaintance in a grocery store baking aisle. Is that who I think it is? College Paige, is that you? It’s been so long.

Yes, it is indeed her. And honestly, just five years later, I don’t really remember who she is anymore. But is that a surprise? I suppose it shouldn’t be. Everything about her changed – even her name.

Now, this editorial could go two ways as I reflect on the past five years: I can focus on what has changed or what hasn’t. What would College Paige have wanted to hear?

From what I can remember about her, she would prefer to hear about what hasn’t. Change is always expected. We know jobs will come and go. We know new friends will be made, and old ones may fade away. We know that we may move from our hometown to the big city and back again. Our families will look different each Christmas.

And we yearn for it. At graduation, we stand excitedly on the brink of change with open arms and hopeful hearts. We feel alive with the possibilities at nearly every new thing, which makes Homecoming such an unusual experience. After all that change we craved, we still look back and try to connect ourselves with who we used to be. We made it past the brink, and now we can look back in comfort knowing that it all happened the way it should have. The differences between then and now are signs of our progress and proof we’re making our way.

But I don’t want to focus on what’s different because I live that every day. While I hardly remember what she was like, I want to spend these few remaining words considering what I may still share with College Paige. What has stayed the same for her? Is there any semblance of that person she was?

Well, one thing is for sure: five years out of the Tower, and she’s still writing her editorial in the middle of the night.

But, aside from the shining virtue of procrastination, I suppose College Paige would be comforted to know that, even five years later, she is still writing. She still loves Jesus. She still loves to sit in silence from time to time. She still loves a good book and a hot cup of tea. She still wants to make the world a little better where she is. She is still in a community.

There’s so much to be said about how much life changes when you leave Grove City College. You spend four years (more or less) in limbo, sandwiched between your childhood and adult self, spending every day developing your personhood. Then, just as soon as you grasp who you are, you step off campus on move-out day and enter the Rest of Your Life and it just goes faster. You change and adapt to every current that life rushes your way. Suddenly, you don’t recognize yourself anymore. It’s not a bad thing. It’s simply a fact everyone recognizes.

So, what stays true? If everything about yourself changes, as God designed it to do, then what really makes you you?

I can’t answer that for you. I can only answer it for her.

To that young 22-year-old woman who was always a little afraid of change, she doesn’t need to worry. It’s all happened as it should. And she can rest knowing that even when everything else around her changes, she is still herself.

By Paige (Fay) Schamberg · Former Editor-in-Chief Before I began writing this editorial, I read some of my old ones from my time at Grove City College.
