The Wolverines celebrated their first victory of the season on Saturday. (Alex DiVitto)

LORETTO — The Grove City College football team put together its most complete performance of the season Saturday, earning a convincing 36-6 road win over Presidents’ Athletic Conference newcomer Saint Francis to complete its nonconference schedule.

The Wolverines controlled the game from start to finish, piling up 432 total yards and 25 first downs while holding Saint Francis to just 202 yards of offense in the program’s first NCAA Division III game.

Freshman running back Nico Casciato rushed for a career-high 102 yards on 16 carries, while quarterback Mike Hollomon threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing score. Senior receivers Darviae Gray and Sam Penna each caught touchdown receptions, as Grove City (1-2) gathered momentum heading into Homecoming weekend.

Junior defensive end Connor Telfer said the victory reflected the team’s commitment to its culture.

“It was awesome getting the 36-6 win today,” Telfer said. “Grove City football really lived in vision out there, and it was clear to see by the way we were playing fast and free.”

The Wolverines wasted little time taking control. On their opening possession, Hollomon capped a 12-play, 73-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Penna for a 7-0 lead. Grove City extended the advantage to 10-0 later in the first quarter when Brady Lane connected on a 27-yard field goal.

A key defensive play helped create the next score. Sophomore linebacker Andrew Moberg recovered a Saint Francis (0-1) fumble and returned it to the home team’s 35-yard line, setting up a touchdown run from senior running back Sutton Ellis that pushed Grove City’s lead to 17-0.

Hollomon added a three-yard rushing touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the first half, giving the Wolverines a commanding 24-0 advantage at the break.

The defense continued to dominate after halftime. A bad Saint Francis snap resulted in a safety, and Gray later caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Hollomon to stretch the lead to 33-0. Devon Thomas added a 42-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to complete Grove City’s scoring.

Moberg led a strong defensive effort with eight tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Cameron Epps added an interception, while Aiden Kitts and Brayden Gerst each recorded eight tackles. The defensive performance was especially encouraging to Telfer.

“Part of our defensive vision is to limit offensive production,” he said. “Seeing that Saint Francis only scored at the end of the fourth quarter shows me our defense truly lived in vision out on the field today, and it was awesome to see.”

While the win was significant, Telfer emphasized that the team’s focus extends beyond the scoreboard, especially since the win did not affect PAC standings because Saint Francis is transitioning to Division III.

“The win showed that no matter the result, we are out there to glorify God,” Telfer said.

That perspective has helped the team remain grounded after an important victory.

As the Wolverines turn their attention toward Saturday night’s Homecoming matchup against Bethany, Telfer said the team’s preparation process remains unchanged.

“The team shifts its focus to the next opponent by acknowledging what we did well and what we need to work on,” he said. “We watch film and practice all in the name of going deeper in vision. We also have a phrase, ‘Be where your feet are,’ to help us fight through distractions and focus on each rep.”

As Homecoming approaches, the Wolverines look to build on their first victory rather than dwell on it, and despite the excitement surrounding the event, the team’s mindset remains consistent.

“Our mindset is what it always is, and that’s to glorify God,” he said. “We like to say, ‘Focus on your vision, not your circumstance.’ No matter who we’re playing or what the occasion is, we’re focused on why we’re playing, and that’s for God.”

Grove City hosts Bethany at 6 p.m. Saturday in the first-ever Homecoming night game at Thorn Field, where the Wolverines look to carry the momentum of their first win into their conference opener.

Wolverines beat new PAC member Saint Francis 36-6 By Reagan Thomas · Staff Writer LORETTO — The Grove City College football team put together its most complete performance of the season Saturday, earning a convincing 36-6 road win over Presidents’ Athletic Conference newcomer Saint Francis to complete its nonconference schedule.
