Over 100 students gathered Saturday in Breen Student Union as witnesses to a crime: a Murder on the Dance Floor. Swing Club and Ballroom Dance Club joined together for this premiere event, presenting an intricately woven drama to dance, converse and piece together a story to solve the murder mystery.

Guests were cordially invited to attend a charity event at the estate of William and Maxine Blackwell. The event sponsors, roles assumed by each member of the executive teams, were all framed as suspects when William Blackwell was found dead soon after the event began. Participants interacted with the suspects throughout the dance, gathering enough information to convict the presumed murderer. Guests competed against one another to determine the murderer and motives by dancing and speaking with suspects.

Winners were determined by both the quickest time of submission and success in solving the crime. Alexander Pratt, James Brooks, Caden Schipani, Greta Paulding and Catherine Maher took home the prize for successfully identifying the murderer first.

While some guests took the mission seriously, others took it as an opportunity to have fun. Swing and Ballroom Dance Club member Juan Carlos Bravo said he admired “how well thought out the story was, including the investigation and the time that was put into it.”

He said the “commitment and passion of the executive team” was evident, and it “had me on my toes the whole time!”

“It was for a good cause, and I really appreciated that,” Bravo added.

The proceeds from this event went towards supporting the International Justice Mission (IJM). Sarah Jacob, the president of Grove City College’s Campus Chapter of IJM, spoke about the mission at the dance. IJM seeks to partner with local justice systems around the world to build safe communities and raise awareness about human trafficking, slavery and other forms of violent oppression. In total, over $700 was donated. All funds contribute towards recognizing injustice and supporting others as they advocate for those oppressed in a world of suffering.

Braedon Weigle, president of the Swing Dance Club, expressed that the dance “went super well and set up success for next year.” He would encourage others to attend in the future, whether they “like dancing, sleuthing or something in between! It’s a great event that has a lot to offer … definitely not a night to stay home from.” Case closed, for this year!
