It “emphasize(s) timeless academic skills and promote(s) critical and logical thinking,” according to CLT’s website.

Assistant Dean for Institutional Assessment Gary Welton undertook the study, titled “Classic Learning Test (CLT) as a Predictor of Student Performance,” which examined 235 students who took the CLT when they applied for admission to the college. Welton found a “statistically significant positive correlation” between the CLT and GPA of first-year Grove City College students, meaning the better a student scored on the CLT, the higher the GPA the student earned at the college.

“The CLT is not only a valid predictor but also a robust and highly effective instrument for identifying students prepared for the rigors of higher education,” the study concluded.

Welton set out to complete the study to determine if standardized testing would predict student academic achievement, per the study, which found that the verbal section of the CLT was the individual section that best predicted stuThe college started accepting CLT scores in 2017. Along with verbal reasoning, the CLT examines grammar, writing and quantitative reasoning, culminating in three total sections.

The study also uncovered statistical differences between types of students. Male Grove City College students generally outperformed female students in the quantitative reasoning portion of the CLT, while homeschooled students outscored non-homeschooled students on the writing section. Students who returned for a second year at the college or graduated performed better across the entire CLT than students who withdrew, particularly on the verbal section.

The study did not reveal a difference in CLT scores between white and minority students.

“For institutions like Grove City College, and others committed to academic excellence, the CLT has proven itself to be an invaluable tool,” Welton concluded in the study. “The results of this study strongly support its continued and expanded use as a primary means of assessing collegiate readiness.”

Per the study, the CLT also showed an increase of five basis points compared to the SAT in terms of the ability of the respective exams to predict the first-year GPA of students (a corrected correlation of 0.58 versus 0.53).

Those interested in learning more can visit the college’s website (gcc.edu) under the news releases tab to find a link to Welton’s study.

“The entrepreneurial spirit of leadership at Grove City College led them to recognize the alignment of this new admissions test and of the students attracted to take it. This study measures the strongly positive return on investment of that enterprising decision,” Noah Tyler said in the release. “The CLT is not just a signal of educational background, but higher scores are an indication of top performance at one of America’s top institutions of higher education.”

Grove City College published a study on the Classic Learning Test (CLT) on Oct. 27, which showed that the CLT could help predict the GPA of the college’s students in their first-year

[184
14,91,39
post-1132","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-administration","tag-front-page","tag-matthew-purucker","tag-issue-2025-11-14
"1536x1536":false,"2048x2048":false
Grove City College published a study on the Classic Learning Test (CLT) on Oct. 27, which showed that the CLT could help predict the GPA of the college’s students in their first-year
["GET
