An astronomy club was formed on the Grove City campus this year that will allow students from all fields to enjoy the wonders of stargazing.
Club meetings are every other Tuesday from 8 to 9 p.m. in STEM 376. Stargazing does not have a set time each week, but it is determined by how clear the skies are on a particular night.
Club members voted on topics for discussion days. Isabel Paul, astronomy club president and founder, said these votes occur so club members need not sit through lectures.
“This way, they can learn what they want to learn about,” Paul said.
There are some big plans for the future of the club, according to Paul. One of the club’s biggest plans is to go to Cherry Springs State Park, where it hopes to see the Milky Way with minimal light pollution.
The club also has plans to host public stargazing nights, as well as private stargazing tours for the dorm hallways. Brendan Steck, vice president of the club, said the club plans on training its members to host these events.
The process to make this club official took longer than anticipated, according to Paul. To turn this club from a simple freshman dream to something campus could enjoy, Paul had to meet with the dean of student affairs, find an advisor and seek out other students willing to serve in leadership positions.
At the end of the process, Paul said that she had to meet with the administrative council, including President Lingo. The club became official and was at the Organization Fair Aug. 28. The club constitution plans to be approved this September.
“We hope this club will give members an awe for the universe and, by extension, God,” Steck said. “Also, (members can hope) to be the cool person at the party who can point out different stars.”
