As an upperclassman who has never yet been asked out by someone I could genuinely see myself dating, the wait can feel long and lonely sometimes. I have lots of friends of both genders and am active in a variety of campus groups. To the best of my knowledge, I am not an unlikeable person, so I don’t think it’s for lack of “putting myself out there.” Any tips on what else to do?
-Still waiting for the prince to come
P.S. Your paper recently ran an article on the most attractive person on campus, and I was quite surprised that the Collegian’s own John Hatzis was not one of the people named. He is a man attractive inside and out, so I am surprised that (to the best of my knowledge) thus far unattached.
As the semester comes to a close, the pressure can mount as everyone pairs up and ships off for the summer. For upperclassmen, ring by spring has already happened, and now there’s nothing left to do but make sure you finish the semester strong. Many of my friends have gotten engaged, and I couldn’t be happier for them. However, finishing your degree without dating anyone feels … off, especially when everyone has already found “the one.” My best advice is to live your life! Remember that a relationship is only supposed to add to the FULL life that you already have. It shouldn’t feel like a missing puzzle piece out of your ideal life track.
Dating to marry is always the goal. Don’t feel bad that the previous options weren’t someone you saw yourself with in the future. Think of it this way: You didn’t waste their time, and they didn’t waste yours.
Right now? I’d say focus on studying for finals and figuring out a way to pack up everything that’s spilling out of your dorm. I don’t think you’ll find your soulmate in the next seven days. There’s always that 0.01% chance that you’ll run into someone this next week that you haven’t seen in the last three to four years you have been here, but that’s doubtful.
God’s timeline is unknown to us, but all we can do is to trust in Him and let the pieces fall where He wills them to.
Yours auspiciously, M.B. (aka Dr. Love)
P.S. To the best of my knowledge, John Hatzis is currently unattached. If there’s some interest there, I would recommend shooting your shot before the semester ends 🙂 Who knows who John Hatzis might meet during the balmy summer months?
